航海从古至今一直有着特殊的地位,而对文化的影响也是潜移默化。这不,好多英语中的俗语就源自于航海。Sailing has a special place in history, and also has a great influence in culture. Many terms in English has an origin from the sea.
28356340c559f2f6add191b9846438b1.jpg Hit the head这个短语非常口语化,但和头可是一点关系都没有。古代大船将厕所设在船头,海事用语中船头(head)被海员们代指厕所,所以hit the head实际上是上厕所的意思。When a person says he’s going to hit the head, he is going to use the restroom. The word ‘head’ was commonly used by sailors and marine personnel to refer to the area designated in ancient ships,where they could relieve themselves.

Know the RopesRope就是指船上的绳索,驾驶帆船就是和绳索打交道,什么8字结、平结…掌握这些绳索后新手也慢慢变成老手了,这个短语就表示懂门道,掌握诀窍。When a sailor knows the mainuses of the ropes on a ship, it indicates that he becomes a master.Thus the phrase "to know the ropes" indicates that someone is competent at what they do.

Scuttlebutt原意是船上装供船员饮用的淡水大桶或者甲板上的饮水柜台。水手们往往聚集在scuttlebutt周围边喝水边说长道短地闲聊。听上去是不是就跟现在的办公室一样。饮水池周围常常是小道新闻或者谣言的发源地。Scuttlebutt这个词逐渐被用来指闲话或谣言了。Scuttlebutt is the cask used to serve water on the boat. Sincesailors exchanged gossip when they gathered at the scuttlebutt for a drink ofwater, just like a modern office. Scuttlebutt became navy slang for gossip orrumours.

Three Sheets To The Windsheet 在船上是缭绳的意思,缭绳若松了,船帆就可以任意随风飘扬。船员们称之为A sheet in the wind,慢慢演变成船员们一句口头语,表示tipsy(微醉).一个缭绳是微醉,那三个在风中飘荡Three sheets in the wind 自然是大醉特醉了."
The term "three sheets to the wind" is generally used to describe someonewho has had too much to drink. It comes from a term that originally described a ship in a complete state of disarray, with its sails flapping in the breeze.

Trim one's sails船帆是sail,水手跟船帆结下不解之缘。水手之间也因而流行不少从sail发展来的习惯用语。Trim在这里的意思是调整船帆以适应风向变化。如今这个习惯用语已经被用在跟操纵船帆不相干的各种事务。所以trim one's sails意思是为适应不同情况而改变观念行动。A lot of idioms are about sail. This metaphoric expression alludes to adjusting a ship's sails to take full advantage of prevailing winds. Now it means to modify one's stand, adapt to circumstances,
