The word ‘head’ was commonly used by sailors and marine personnel to refer to the area designated in ancient ships, where they could relieve themselves.

Know the RopesRope就是指船上的绳索,驾驶帆船就是和绳索打交道,什么8字结、平结…掌握这些绳索后新手也慢慢变成老手了,这个短语就表示懂门道,掌握诀窍。When a sailor knows the mainuses of the ropes on a ship, it indicates that he becomes a master. Thus the phrase "to know the ropes" indicates that someone is competent at what they do.

Scuttlebutt原意是船上装供船员饮用的淡水大桶或者甲板上的饮水柜台。水手们往往聚集在scuttlebutt周围边喝水边说长道短地闲聊。听上去是不是就跟现在的办公室一样。饮水池周围常常是小道新闻或者谣言的发源地。Scuttlebutt这个词逐渐被用来指闲话或谣言了。Scuttlebutt is the cask used to serve water on the boat. Sincesailors exchanged gossip when they gathered at the scuttlebutt for a drink ofwater, just like a modern office. Scuttlebutt became navy slang for gossip orrumours.

Three Sheets To The Windsheet 在船上是缭绳的意思,缭绳若松了,船帆就可以任意随风飘扬。船员们称之为A sheet in the wind,慢慢演变成船员们一句口头语,表示tipsy(微醉).一个缭绳是微醉,那三个在风中飘荡Three sheets in the wind 自然是大醉特醉了."
The term "three sheets to the wind" is generally used to describe someonewho has had too much to drink. It comes from a term that originally described a ship in a complete state of disarray, with its sails flapping in the breeze.

Trim one's sails船帆是sail,水手跟船帆结下不解之缘。水手之间也因而流行不少从sail发展来的习惯用语。Trim在这里的意思是调整船帆以适应风向变化。如今这个习惯用语已经被用在跟操纵船帆不相干的各种事务。所以trim one's sails意思是为适应不同情况而改变观念行动。A lot of idioms are about sail. This metaphoric expression alludes to adjusting a ship's sails to take full advantage of prevailing winds. Now it means to modify one's stand, adapt to circumstances,
